The living quarters of Villa Sembunyi consists of two separate houses, Villa Sembunyi & Pondok Sembunyi, as well as a third house for the villa staff. The property land covers an area totaling 1,400 square meters, which is considered quite spacious for the Umalas area.
Located at the end of a private lane, the two villas & staff house are set on a beautifully maintained, luxurious tropical garden which includes a large pond in the center featuring natural stones, water lilies & fish. The property is entirely walled, ensuring the seclusion, privacy and relaxation of all guests.
Villa Sembunyi, the larger of the two villas, is located at the far end of the garden on the river. This two-story villa, which has been built around a central courtyard, has a total floor area of almost 600 square metres. The building has a distinctive Japanese style and has been constructed from tropical wood – mostly merbau, as well as some bankirai. It has a large inside sitting and dining area of over 135 square meters, and has a beautifully finished wood flooring of 4-cm thick, 20 to 30-cm wide merbau planks. In the centre of the house, one finds a soaring 8-meter high bamboo roof. In addition, the villa has four very comfortable bedrooms, all of which are air-conditioned. Two of these bedrooms have also been fitted with an extra ceiling fan. Each bedroom has a king-size double bed and an en-suite marble-tiled open bathroom.
Each room has its own distinct atmosphere, both in terms of furnishings and dimensions. The Dutch master bedroom measures 60 square meters, the Chinese bedroom 30, the Japanese Tokonoma bedroom 28, and the Balinese bedroom 35 square meters (floor areas include the en-suite bathrooms). The rooms’ characteristic furnishings, which differ from one space to the next, create a feeling of comfort, elegance and luxury. A flight of stairs along the outer wall of the Dutch master bedroom leads up to a spacious open sitting room. This room is furnished with comfortable colonial daybeds and a colonial bench and forms a great spot for gathering. From this room a second flight of stairs leads up to a roof terrace that offers a splendid view of the surrounding area. The main kitchen is fitted with a wide range of quality appliances – enough to satisfy even the most demanding cook.
The smaller villa, Pondok Sembunyi, owes its name to the Indonesian word for ‘cottage’. But this is actually something of an understatement for this free-standing building with a floor area of some 200 square meters. Pondok Sembunyi is located near the entrance of the compound, some 50 meters from the main house. The villa features a fully-furnished open kitchen, an open dining area, an indoor sitting area on the ground floor and two upstairs open sitting areas. Pondok Sembunyi has one bedroom on the ground floor with a semi-open en-suite bathroom.
The complex has a large parking area near the entrance to the compound.
Tucked away in the still quiet part of Umalas (Kerobokan, Badung), one can find the private retreat Villa Sembunyi (‘sembunyi’ means ‘hidden’ in the Indonesian language).
Although Umalas has become increasingly sought-after as a place of residence, it is still a relatively quiet place close to the bustling and busy tourist villages of South Bali (Kuta, Legian and Seminyak).
Villa Sembunyi is 35minutes by car from Ngurah Rai International Airport and is located only 2 kilometres from the still quiet beach of Batubelig.
